The most important thing to remember is that the bedroom should dictate your personality.
For most people, the bedroom is the most sacred part of their home. The bedroom embodies serenity and privacy for the one who occupies it.
It is true that the bedroom is the most private place in the home and usually goes unseen by anyone other than the home’s occupants. Even though this is true, it is important to maintain the appearance and beauty of the bedroom because it is the only place that you can completely have to yourself.
Here are some great tips on improving your bedroom.
1. You should always keep your room neat and tidy. Clutter and mess can really have an effect on your mood. This is the first step towards improving your bedroom. If you keep the room clean and clutter free this will make any home improvement job easier because you are not wasting all of your time cleaning before you make improvements.
2. If you are not making any big construction improvements to your room but still want a little change, you can try reorganizing and rearranging it to make it look different. You can move the furniture around and find the best new place for certain pieces. This is also a great way to make improvements in you bedroom if you live in an apartment or rental.
3. It is possible that you have decided that you have gotten bored with the color of your walls and it is time to repaint. Painting can be a fun way to improve your bedroom. The walls can dictate the over all look of a room and changing the color can really be an improvement or enhancement. A lot of time and thought should be given on deciding on the new color for your walls before painting them, otherwise you can end up with something you do not like and it can be a waste of time and money. Some paint suppliers offer sample size paint containers. These are handy and a good way to paint a small strategic area to see if the color is the color you want.
4. If your budget allows it, a great way to improve your bedroom is to buy new things. A whole new bedroom suite can really change the look of your bedroom. If you do not really have the money for a new bedroom suite you can always think smaller and get a new bedding set. A new bedding set can be your sheets, pillowcases and comforter or you can get a new mattress set. The mattress set may not improve you bedroom as far as looks are concerned but it can really improve your sleep.
If changing your bedding set isn’t in your plans then another lower budget option is adding new curtains, decorative pillows or unique modern throws to refresh and give warmth to your bedroom.
These are just a few ideas to consider if you have decided you are bored with your old bedroom.
Getting the inside of your home looking good can be a challenge and requires a certain amount of skill and knowledge in order to pull it off. Using the right colors and combinations for the curtains, decorative pillows, modern decorative throws, area rugs even your bed sheets and duvet colors can make a big difference in the general appearance of a room.
Sometimes keeping a space design simple is often the best way to go. Try to remove as much clutter as possible and use simple color combinations like black and white.
Using candles effectively can also be great to add a nice decorating style to any room. Create a grouping of candles on a side table or you can also use floating candles in a bowl.
Adding relevant artwork and paintings can also greatly enhance the appearance of your home. Make sure the artwork matches with the theme you are going for in each room.
Keeping a room bright is a great design choice. Also keep in mind that when you are in a bright space versus a dull and dark area it helps to elevate your mood. Decorating your fireplace effectively can make a dramatic difference in the appearance of your living room since the fireplace is often considered one of the main focal points. Try not to block your fireplace and leave the space around it clear and free from too much furniture.
Hanging a nice piece of artwork above the mantle can be a great accent and can make a nice difference in making the fireplace look better. Also try to avoid adding too many things on or around the fireplace as this will make it look cluttered and unattractive.
Remember that each room has its personality and style.

(ARA) – Savvy homeowners are becoming master illusionists these days working with their smaller rooms to make them appear bigger and more spacious. Even a house with a maze of irregularly shaped rooms can be designed to enhance the flow from room-to-room giving the impression of more space. So instead of dismissing your smaller rooms, embrace them! According to Chris Sy, from Carlisle Wide Plank Floors, smaller sized rooms can be useful and beautiful. “They make a house unique and with the right techniques, you can make the most of these areas. The goal is to create a room that you can use, is pleasing to the eye, and doesn’t feel cramped.”
Follow these tips to make the most of the smaller rooms in your home:
Walls:Paint the walls with lighter color paints to make a room seem bigger. Lighter colors also reflect the natural light and help to open the space. Consider lighter tones such as nudes and natural colors or use pastels such as powder blue or a light yellow.
Lighting: Lighting is an important element in small rooms. The room should be properly lit to expand the space. Consider replacing table and floor lamps with wall fixtures. If you cannot replace these items, look for ones that are space friendly and have small shades or no shades at all.
Floors: You may be surprised to learn that floors can make a world of difference in how large a room feels. Steer away from narrow floor boards. It may seem logical to use narrow boards in small rooms, but in actuality it makes the room appear busy and cluttered. Wide plank wood floors are great for smaller rooms because they are easy to keep clean and add visual character. Sy says, “Wider floor boards, some 8 to 10-inches, are being used in smaller rooms and they open up the space wonderfully. In older colonial homes, the widest boards were used on the second floor where many of the smaller rooms were located.”
Wide plank wood floors provide the simplicity that is needed in rooms with limited space. By eliminating the majority of seams in the floor and choosing a lighter color, the room will appear open and airy. “Look for boards with subtle grain patterns and fewer knots. At Carlisle, we suggest maple or eastern white pine because these woods have a less prominent grain,” adds Sy.
Furniture: Whether a small living room, bedroom, office or den, there will be various pieces of furniture you will need to make the room functional. When working with a smaller area, determine what you need and what you want. Only using key pieces of furniture will ensure that the room is functional, but not cluttered.
When purchasing furniture, think about pieces that can perform multiple tasks. For example, an end table that has drawers can double for storing small items. Consider smaller pieces to open up space, such as choosing a love seat over a couch. Another helpful tip is to think vertically. Shelving and other items that bring the eye upward make the room feel larger.
Decor: When decorating a smaller room, it’s best to keep things simple. Choose one or two pieces of art to display. On accessories such as decorative pillows and drapes, choose fabrics that have minimal patterns or utilize solid colors. It’s important to decorate every room with your personal tastes in mind, but the general rule to follow is less is more. Add too many items in your small room and it will end up feeling even smaller.
From wide plank wood flooring to wall fixture lights, if you follow these simple guidelines you’ll be able to make your smaller rooms appear bigger and become your own master illusionist. For more information on flooring and style options, visit www.wideplankflooring.com or call (800) 595-9663.

A Fairy’s house stands in a wood,
Midst fairy trees and flowers,
Where daisies sing like little birds
Between the sun and showers,
And grasses whisper tiny things
About this world of ours.
Such flowers are there beside the way,
Lilies and hollyhocks:
Blow off their stalks to tell the time
Tall dandelion clocks;
While pansies ring an hourly chime
Like a wound music-box.
Some day shall we two try to find
This strange enchanted place?
Go hand in hand through flower-lit woods
Where living trees embrace –
And suddenly, as in a dream,
Behold a fairy’s face!
We are excited to introduce new additions to our pewter fairy collection. Just like the others, these also feature real butterfly wings.
