Hand-made doilies are known all over Europe as macrame. In Romania, the making of macrame doilies has become an art that can truly measure up to painting, music, writing, and sculpting.
This Romanian point lace doily is hand made by Tudora Obrejan and will be a little piece of art in your house or a beautiful present from Romania.
One of the reasons is their splendor: the fine thread, the minute details in each pattern, the uniqueness of embroidery, and the creativity each creator has to offer. Another reason is their durability: these doilies last beyond the lifetime of their creators to grace the life of their inheritors. Macrame are made to last, their possession is eternal.
Macrame’s acceptance and popularity is visible in many Romanian houses. Art experts know very well the process of creating them, and their value is appreciated across Europe. Their existence in many houses has become a fashion. You see them on dining room tables accompanied by beautiful vases, on vanities surrounded by jewelry boxes or candles, or as the sole decoration on a coffee table.
Their value is incalculable. The doilies’ value consists mainly in the talent of their makers, who learn the artistry of creation from the most experienced and dedicated teachers in this field: their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, or friends. The creation of these wonderful pieces takes months and months; only devoted macrame lovers complete them. Patience and determination are qualities required for this art.
Romanian village women are the creators of macrame doilies. These are incredible women who work from sunrise to sunset and longer. These are the women who work the fields side by side with their husbands, raise children, prepare food, and are in charge of housekeeping. These same women, during hard winter days or long summer nights, meet in small groups with other women to share their stories and create crafts for their home such as feather pillows and covers, draperies, carved vases, clothes, and, most impressively, macrame doilies. While experienced women are making macrame doilies, the village’s young women swarm around their mothers curious to learn how to make them, and maybe one day be like their mothers. This is the time when these girls, by learning from their mothers, also preserve tradition. It takes ambition, hard work, talent, and many years for these young ladies to turn into dexterous, skillful, macrame creators. And when the time comes, they will be ready to teach their daughters all the secrets and skills learned from their mothers that they perfected over the passing years.
